I came across this family while looking for something else - I thought it might be of interest, especially as there is a photo of a modern man with blue skin (not with makeup, but through biology).
The Fugate family had a recessive gene which resulted in blue skin. But they were otherwise healthy and lived to old age.

After reading about my favourite Vineans for so many years I have to say this did come as a shock
Thank you for this article. Quite interesting.
Deux roses sur une branche... la première se fana et mourut... l'autre n'y survécut...
Hello again,
This article first appeared in a British science journal in the 1980's and is quoted from that after a Geneticist investigated the condition. That is how it was first brought to world attention.
At first I thought it was a classic 'urban myth' joke too, but upon asking my university collueges about it I have discovered that yes, it was a genuine case and still appears today. Babies with it often have blue instead of whites of eyes for instance and have to take a drug to reverse it, while others get purple/blue nails. Other than that, it is naturally extremely rare.
I wonder what the Vineans would have made of them...?
